Courses & Credentials
IBUM approved continuing education programs enable participants to
obtain advanced undersea medical training. Each course usually requires
a minimum of 40 contact hours (except for DiveSponder). Prior
to IBUM approval each instructor must demonstrate that his or her program
provide attendees, who wish to treat and supervise hyperbaric therapy
of diving injuries or diving or hyperbaric chamber operations, all pertinent
medical and operational information.
Diving Medical Officer DMP
Physician applicants for Diving Medical Officer (Physician) must have
completed a program of study that equals or exceeds the standards of
medical education of the American Medical Association or the American
Osteopathic Association.
Diver Medical Technician DMT
Basic Diver Medical Technician (DMT) applicants must have completed
an approved Basic DMT course and hold current certification as an Emergency
Medical Technician, Registered Nurse (RN), Respiratory Therapist (RT)
or Physician Assistant (PA). Advanced DMT applicants must have completed
an approved Basic, and Advanced DMT course and hold a current EMT-P

and Registered Nurses applying for IBUM credentials include verification

Chamber Operator
Chamber Operations applicants must have completed an approved hyperbaric
chamber operations course, which can be any of the programs described

do not currently hold allied healthcare provider credential but desire
to function in a hyperbaric environment. Commercial, research and military
divers, as well as dive tenders and scuba instructors are candidates
who apply for this certificate.
DiveSponder
DiveSponder (dive injury first responder) is a 12-hour course
designed to provide divers of all disciplines training in advance diving
injury recognition and first aid skills. Ideal training for a remote
location this program also includes treatment for diving disorders besides
decompression illness. It includes modules in pulmonary and otic barotraumas,
marine injuries and other physical problems that may arise during any
dive outing. Prior CPR training is a prerequisite for attending this
course.
